iPhone group text limits, and what to use instead
Group texts don’t fail with a clear error when they get too big. They fail by turning green, splitting into separate threads, or quietly dropping people. Here’s where the limits are and what to do when you hit them.
The short answer
| Kind of group | Practical limit | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| iMessage (all iPhones) | Widely reported as 32 people | Apple |
| MMS (any Android in the group) | Often 10–20, varies | Each member’s carrier |
| RCS (iPhone on iOS 18+ and Android) | Larger, when it works | Every member’s carrier and settings |
Limits change with software updates and carrier policies. Treat these as typical, not guaranteed.
Why mixed groups break first
An all-iPhone group uses iMessage. Add one Android phone and the group falls back to MMS or RCS, which run through the carriers — and each carrier sets its own limits on group size and message size. That’s why a group of fifteen can work fine for months, then start failing the day you hire someone with a different phone.
Signs you’ve outgrown a group text
- You can’t add a new person, or adding them creates a new thread.
- Some people say they never got a message that you can see as sent.
- Replies show up in separate one-on-one threads for some people.
- The thread has a former employee in it that you can’t remove.
- People have muted it — you know because they keep asking things you already announced.
What to use instead
Size limits are the visible problem. The bigger ones are reply-all noise and everyone seeing everyone’s number, and those start well before 32. Your options:
- Split into smaller groups by shift or role. Free, but more threads to maintain.
- WhatsApp or GroupMe, if everyone will install them. Airhorn vs WhatsApp · Airhorn vs GroupMe.
- Your scheduling app’s messaging, if everyone actually has notifications on.
- An SMS broadcast tool, which sends individual texts to any number of people with no group at all.
Common questions
How many people can be in an iPhone group text?
For an all-iMessage group, the widely reported limit is 32 people. If anyone in the group uses Android, the group runs over MMS or RCS and the limit depends on carriers — MMS groups are often capped somewhere between 10 and 20.
Why did my group text turn green?
At least one person in the group isn’t on iMessage, so the whole group switched to SMS/MMS (green) or RCS. Carrier limits on size and attachments then apply to everyone.
Can I text more than 32 people at once from an iPhone?
Not as one group. You can send individual messages, but sending many identical texts from a personal line gets filtered by carriers. A broadcast service is the reliable way past that.
No group, so no group limit
Airhorn sends each employee their own text — up to 100 people on the Plus plan, no thread to outgrow.
